What does native mean?
Native plants have formed symbiotic relationships with native wildlife over thousands of years, and therefore offer the most sustainable habitat. A plant is considered native if it has occurred naturally in a particular region, ecosystem, or habitat without human introduction.
The importance of native plants?
Native plants help the environment the most when planted in places that match their growing requirements. They will thrive in the soils, moisture and weather of your region. That means less supplemental watering, which can be wasteful, and pest problems that require toxic chemicals. Native plants also assist in managing rain water runoff and maintain healthy soil as their root systems are deep and keep soil from being compacted.
Take the Watershed Week clean water pledge and take home a FREE native tree or shrub!! All native trees and shrubs provided by the Keystone 10 Million Tree partnership.

Make small changes at home that will have big positive impacts on our waters. Have a big lawn? Turn a portion into a native plant or rain garden. Have a dog? Clean up their poo-poo often because letting it sit can make our water sick. Have a car? Wash it at a commercial car wash or on your lawn.
What is non point source (NPS) pollution?
NPS pollution generally results from land runoff, precipitation, atmospheric deposition, drainage, seepage or hydrologic modification. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters and ground waters.
